This cute, inexpensive little craft will add a whole lot of oomph and one-of-a-kind quality to your child’s bedside lamp and can be finished in minutes.
You’ll need a plain, fabric lampshade, because you’re going to draw, yes draw, pictures on it that will appeal to your kiddo’s particular interests.
Add his or her name to it and you’ve created a lampshade that’s unique and functional.
Now I know what you’re thinking: Puh-lease, I can’t draw for anything!
But here’s the thing, it doesn’t have to be perfect.
The best part about it is that it’s not perfect. It’s perfect for your little because you did it.
I don’t pretend my drawing is any great shakes. LOL for real!
It literally took me all of 10 or 15 minutes to draw a little golden stick-like figure of my daughter beside our home, framed with trees, birds and a bright sun in the sky.
A welcoming, meandering path leads to the front door.
Then floating off to the side and back of the lampshade are simple circles, some intersecting.
But my daughter loves it, because it’s glittery and it features her and her name and her home and her mom drew it for her.
Now I know what you’re thinking: Puh-lease, I can’t draw for anything! But here’s the thing, it doesn’t have to be perfect. The best part about it is that it’s not perfect. It’s perfect for your little because you did it.
And if you’ve got two children sharing a room, draw something of interest on either side of the lampshade so that when each one looks over at it, he’ll see something of interest to him that you’ve drawn. You did it with your very own mini-me in mind.
It’s a little creative win-win that you can do yourself. And you can do it!
Remodel An Old Lampshade
I took a lamp we already had with a fabric lampshade. As you can see, the middle is wood carved to look like white sea coral.
I used this gold acrylic marker with a medium point and went ahead and doodled on the lampshade. It dries super fast.
Make sure to keep your drawing on the front of the lampshade with the fabric seam at the back.
As you can see, I dove right in and drew across the lampshade seam because real life and I’m far from perfect!
It’s not a huge deal but something to watch for as you take pen to hand.
Then I added gold glitter glue like this and minutes later, my daughter had her very own bedazzled lamp beside her bed.
It really did take all of 10 minutes.
Lampshade Makeover Ideas
Use any colors you want. I had the gold marker and gold glue glitter on hand because bright, shiny objects and that’s how we roll around here!
You could also let your child decorate their own lampshade.
You could also decorate a lamp for another room in your home.
If you’re going to draw something yourself, here are a few ideas to get you started for a girl and/or boy’s room:
- A drawing of your home with your child in the picture.
- A castle.
- The ever-popular unicorn.
- Dragons.
- Nature scenes of birds, trees, flowers, butterflies, lakes or mountains.
- Family pets or other animals of interest.
- The action hero or heroine from a movie, book or show that your child likes.
- Shapes, such as hearts, circles, and squares.
- Your child’s name written in one place or all over the shade.
- Things that move, such as cars, trains, planes and bikes.
- A world atlas or map of your town or street.
- Angels.
- Inspiring sayings, mottoes or prayers.
Don’t overthink it.
Let me know if you come up with more ideas.
Enjoy and have fun with your child on this inexpensive project that comes from your heart.
